IPC - AISEF Indian Pepper App Launched
Effort of creating sustainability of pepper in India is always upheld by taking new initiatives. The latest initiative brought up by AISEF in collaboration with the International Pepper Community was the development of India Farmers App, app which connects framers with agri-research institutions, government and markets. The App which was launched on 14th November 2018 in Kochi, India, was officially released by M K Shanmuga Sundaram the Secretary of Spice Board India.
In that occasion Mr. Sundaram expressed that holistic approach which combined research institutes, farmers collectives, industry and government bodies to revive the sector (pepper) was needed, thus bringing an increase in the production and better price realization. He further expressed that the Farmers App was a step in the right direction.
The App is preloaded with vast information on good agriculture practices and also pest and disease problems; how to recognize and treat them. Complete with Price Poll feature, collection of daily prices from a wide range of sources, this app is available for both Android and IOS in English, Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada.
Within the same occasion Chairman of the AISEF, Mr. Prakash Namboodiri, stated "The farmers would get guidance on pepper farm practices, fertilizer recommendations, pest and other diseases identification and resolving them. The app would also guide the framer through price movements and assist them in selling their produce".
Furthermore, the Executive Director of International Pepper Community, Mrs. Hoang Thi Lien, still in the same occasion expressed her view on the current and future condition of pepper industry. She believed that having experience worse period for pepper price in 2017, in the second half of 2018 it had become less volatile. She also warned farmers not to expect 'sky-high' prices in the coming years due to speculation and instead of real demand. She also believed that Minimum Import Price (MIP) imposed by Government of India was not a correct step as prices were also declining in all producing countries thus India couldn't be an excluded.
