IPC adopted new revised IPC Standard Specifications for Whole Black and White pepper, Whole Dehydrated Green pepper and Ground Black and White pepper
The International Pepper Community has recently published a revised Standard for Pepper and Pepper Products. The new revised IPC Standard Specification was drawn up by the IPC Committee on Quality consisting of the expert members from all the IPC member countries including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam at the 21st Meeting of IPC Committee on Quality held in Cochin, India in September 2015. The proposed revised Standard Specification of IPC was then tabled for consideration by the Executive Meeting of the Heads of Delegation at the last 43rd Annual Session of IPC held in Mysore, India in November 2015 and it was further agreed to adopt the Standard as the IPC Standards Specifications for Pepper and Pepper Products.
The International Pepper Community (IPC) is an inter-governmental organization of pepper producing countries, established in 1972 under the auspices of the United Nations - Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, consisting of Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam as full members and Papua New Guinea as an associate member. Together, the IPC member countries account for more than 88% of the world production and 95% in export of Pepper during the year 2014. The main objective of the IPC is to promote, coordinate and harmonize all activities related to the pepper economy.
The Standards comprises of IPC Standard Specifications for Whole Black and White pepper, Whole Dehydrated Green pepper and Ground Black and White pepper. Initial two grades adopted for Black and White pepper now expanded for three grades, for each, after considering the needs of the trade. New specifications were adopted for Dehydrated Green pepper and Ground Black and White pepper. The Committee tried to keep all the values in achievable to the producers and acceptable to the consumer safety and maintenance of those values while storage is need to be looked after by the trade.
