Geographical Indication of Lampung Black Pepper
(IO/IPC) The flagship agricultural product from the Province of Lampung with Lampung Black Pepper has recently received Geographical Indication Certificate from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
The Masyarakat Indikasi Geographis Lada Hitam Lampung (MIG-LHL) - Geographical Indication Community of Lampung black pepper submitted the application for obtaining the GI status for Lampung Black Pepper, two years ago to the Directorate General of Intellectual Copy Rights of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.
The MIG-LHL is an orngaiztaion representing the community / pepper farmers located in the districts of West Lampung (Kabupaten Lampung Barat), Tanggamus, North Lampung (Kabupaten Lampung Utara), East Lampung (Kabupaten Lampung Timur) which was established to protect the products and quality of Lampung Black Pepper and to promote and apply for the intellectual copyright of Geographical indicadtions for the products produced by these areas, mainly Lampung Black Pepper and Robusta Coffee.
Lampung Black Pepper is produced by more than 100,000 small-scale producers in rich volcanic soils and in a hot climate with precipitations between 2000 and 2500 mm/year. Pepper has been of the main cash crops in Lampung since the 17th century, reaching the worldwide reputation and is traded as the famous Lampung Black Pepper in the major consuming countries like USA, Europe and other countries.
The handing over of the GI certificates for the Lampung Black Pepper and Lampung Robusta Coffee were made at a function held at the Vice-President office in Jakarta on 18th July 2016 by the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Mr. Yasonna Laoly which was received by Head of Estate Crops office of Lampung Province, Mr. Edi Yanto. Present at the handing over of the GI certificate for Lampung Black Pepper and Robusta Coffee were the Vice-President, H.E. Jusuf Kalla and other top officials.

The IPC wishes to congratulate the MIG-LHL and pepper producers in Lampung for getting the GI registration from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights for Lampung Black Pepper, which is well know in the world pepper industry as one of the finest pepper varieties due to its burning pungency, taste and aroma.
