Executive Director of the International Pepper Community to visit Cambodia in June 2017
In the visit, ED had a fruitful meeting with H.E. Minister of Commerce, H.E. Sorasak Pan and officials from Trade Promotion Directorate, Agriculture Ministry, NGOs representatives, exporters, the industry, farmers, and other relevant stakeholders. Site visits to pepper gardens in Tboung Khmom and Kampot also made. The purpose of the visit is to understand and update the current situation of Cambodia's pepper industry. More importantly, in the meeting ED has also tabled a proposal for Cambodian government to consider becoming a member of the International Pepper Community. It is estimated that Cambodia production would be reaching about 20,000 tons in 2017. It has been a remarkable development in term of production as compared with 2016. In term of market reputation, Cambodia's Kampot pepper wins EU Protected Geographical Indication and is very well-known globally.
In the meeting, ED was to brief the Minister on the member's benefits and obligations, organizational structure of the IPC. She also provided information about accession's terms and condition, and procedures. ED stressed the importance of sharing information, learning expertise and experiences and enhancing cooperation with other producing countries to promote pepper industry and support farming community.
It is expected that Cambodia's participation in the IPC would help its pepper industry to develop credibility toward sustainability and as a result, the IPC would be enlarging with a new active and dynamic member and have a strong impact on the global pepper industry.
The Minister welcomes and has positively considered the IPC proposal by giving mandates to the Ministry to further study on it. It is his belief that as an emerging producing country, Cambodia needs support and technical assistance from the IPC members to environmentally and sustainably develop its pepper industry. Furthermore, active feedback and responses are also shown from the industry and exporters, NGOs, associations at provincial level, farmers etc.
As a first step to work together, the IPC will collaborate with the Ministry to organize a national workshop on pepper business in Cambodia in the third quarter 2017.
On behalf of the IPC, ED sincerely thanks H.E. Minister Sorasak Pan and his esteem team for generous hospitality and excellent arrangements made for her visit. The IPC has committed to work closely with the Ministry of Commerce and other agencies to support Cambodia in this effort and hopes Cambodia would become an IPC member soon.
