BLACK PEPPER Q1 FY 2020

At the outset we wish all our readers a happy, healthy and safe time. Pepper markets have been less volatile in 2020 as compared to the past 5 years. Part of the narrative revolves around global pandemic of Corona Virus and a drop in production in the world's largest growing country. While there are many origins in the world only one location is exporting close to 60% of the trade. In this report we cover Vietnam and would hereby like to summarize salient points for 2020 - Jan to March.


VIET NAM:

Exports from Viet Nam

1.1. This is the largest export for the first quarter ever since Vietnam has been exporting black pepper.

1.2. The share of Ground pepper has been increasing since Vietnam started milling and it continues to grow. Interestingly local Vietnamese companies have invested and have ventured in the grinding space.

1.3. Share of Form of pepper: 82 % of the pepper exported was still in whole form.

1.7 FY 2018-2020 YOY comparison

The Total export in 2019 was 21% higher than that of 2018. 2020 on the other hand saw exports rise by 10%.

In the past two years, 2019 YTD export quantity recorded a much higher spike and presented the highest growth. It is observed that in 2019 customers bought slightly more that they usually do as prices were very sharp in 2019. The prices in 2020 were almost similar or close to the prices in the latter part of 2019.
