Black pepper market showed a mixed response this week. In Vietnam and Lampung, prices increased; while in India and Sri Lanka decreased. In Sarawak local prices remained stable at MYR 26.5 and MYR 36.5 per kg for black and white Pepper, respectively. Very tight stock in Lampung and Vietnam was the main reason for the increase. With limited supplies from these sources, buyers are watching on development in India with its upcoming crop in January/February is expected to be good. Under this situation, downward trend of the new crop offers is anticipated.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED STATES:
The most important market, United States of America imports at around 70,000 Mt pepper annually. This year, import to the United States is estimated to remain high and cross 70,000 Mt as well. Under the situation of high prevailing price levels, inventory is considered to be very minimal and import volume this year reflects the real demand of the country. During three quarter of this year (January - September 2014) the United States imported 52,634 Mt of pepper, comprising of 37,947 Mt of black, 4,104 Mt of white and 10,582 Mt of ground pepper. When compared to imports in the same period last year, import up to September increased marginally by 1%. While Import of black pepper increasing by 737 Mt (2%), import of white and ground pepper decreased by 136 and 210 Mt. , respectively. Vietnam was the main source of black pepper, supplying 62% of the demand to USA. Brazil and Indonesia supplied 18 and 13% respectively. In the case of white pepper, Indonesia supplied 57% and Vietnam 38%. Import of ground pepper was mainly from India and Vietnam.
