he International Pepper Community Wishes a Joyous New Year 2014 to all our Subscribers.
It is reported that the new crop light Pepper as well as heavy Pepper has started arriving in the interior markets in India. These products are briskly consumed by the local traders at prices slightly lower than the prevailing price changing the bullish sentiments of the market. Still the market price is ruling at the record level of around USD 8700 per ton.
The new crop size of the Indian share is estimated only 45-48000 tons with very limited carry over, hence the reversal can only be for a short period as consumers are waiting in their wings for coverage from any source as there has been a crunch for supplies in Vietnam, Brazil and Indonesia.
Vietnam crop is considered good and the new crop will hit the market during early February. Light berries have started arriving in the market and are being absorbed by the blenders who sell 500 gl to different destinations and are also imported by Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. Price levels are USD 6000-6300 per ton for 280-300gl.
Heavy Pepper is more or less extinct and only small quantities are available in the market. Most of them have not stocked Pepper and have enchased every grain in anticipation of a drop in prices as this year one could fetch USD 8000 and above for Black.
Our enquiries in the importing countries have revealed that almost all countries are waiting for the new crop from Vietnam and India to enter the market and when the prices slide to operate. Such situation has always triggered activity during season and the price line and supply crunch activates the market thereby volatility will become very conspicuous.
Given the stock positions with the grinders, traders and all connected agencies it is certain that demand will emanate during the first quarter of 2014 thereby the price strata will be maintained till March 2014. Rest will depend on the strength of the supplier mainly Vietnam and if they get an off take of more than 100,00 tons for the first three months then the price line will not recede giving a moral boost to the stockiest.
This is possible only because of total sold out position of Brazil and Indonesia and the poor crop of India. Hence all demand will focus on Vietnam till August when Indonesia enters the arena. Malaysia sells their produce to their own established markets and also their domestic demand is growing so is the case in Indonesia as well. 2014 is going to be an interesting year for Black Pepper Industry.
Let us share our wisdom on 25th February 2014 at Hotel Hyatt, Dubai during the SECOND International Pepper Conclave of the IPC.
