WPB Week #28/13, 8 - 12 July 2013
The market remained steady with limited activities. At Kochi, local price of Malabar ungarbked black pepper was stable throughout the week at INR 38,500 per quintal. When compared to the last week-s average price however, a marginal decrease was recorded. At National Multi Commodity Exchange, it was reported that the July contract has gained on Thursday trading at IND 40,550 while September contract rose to INR 40,530. In Lampung, the picking in certain area is increasing, but material is only expected to enter local market by end of July. Currently, local price of Lampung black was stable at IDR 54,500 per kg. In Bangka, the harvest has also started, but trading is still limited. Farmers are reluctant to immediate selling their material at reduced price.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM INDONESIA
During 2012, export of pepper from Indonesia increased significantly from 36,500 mt in 2011 to 62,600 mt in 2012, comprising 49,500 mt of black and 13,100 mt of white pepper. The significant increase was due to the significant increase in production and export of black pepper from Lampung, which so far contributes almost 90% of black pepper export from Indonesia. During 2012, export of black pepper from Lampung increased more than double from 21,245 mt in 2011 to 43,225 mt in 2012. In 2013, export of pepper from Indonesia is estimated to be lower. Besides limited stocks brought from 2012, an anticipated less output from this year harvest is also considered to be the main reason for the decrease. Up to May 2013, export of pepper from Lampung decreased further to 526 mt from the peak of 8,925 mt in September 2012. During the first five months, total export from Lampung was only 5,136 as against 7,046 mt in 2012 and 13,150 in 2011.
