The market was steady with slightly selling pressure, particularly in Vietnam. Local prices at most producing countries continued to be stable, with the exception in Sri Lanka. In dollar terms, local price in India and Malaysia decreased marginally due to weakening of local currency against US dollar. In Vietnam, the price was also stable for the last few weeks. Local price of Vietnamese pepper stood at VND 119,500 per kg for black and VND 187,500 for white. Unlike in the producing countries, an increase of 2% was recorded for black pepper price in Europe.

EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM SRI LANKA: Sri Lanka, one of the IPC member countries, produces around 14,500 mt of pepper and exports around 7,800 mt annually (average 2007-2011). During 2012, production of pepper in Sri Lanka was around 17,000 mt. Out of this a volume of 10,500 mt valued at USD 70 million was exported in 2012 and the balance was consumed locally. Around 40% of pepper exported from Sri Lanka in 2012 was light berries and mostly shipped to India. Sri Lanka also exported 12 mt of pepper oil valued at 2 million in 2012, with India as the single important destination, absorbing 60% of pepper oil from Sri Lanka. For the year 2013, production and export of pepper from Sri Lanka is estimated to be slightly higher than that of the production and export performance achieved in 2012.
