Obituary
We were shocked to hear of the sad demise of Mr. K.P.G. Menon (72) on 4th April 2013 in Hyderabad, India. The cremation was held in Secunderabad 5th April 2013 at 9.30 am Mr. Menon born in Guruvayur, Kerala, India on 1st July 1941, was the Executive Director of IPC, Jakarta for 5 years from 3rd Nov. 1998 - 3rd December 2003. We really missed him, and no doubt so many others who are in the spice industry will miss him too. He was so inspiring, loving, caring wise man for all the staff at IPC Jakarta. We will never forget his services with IPC Jakarta as our Executive Director. All the officers and staff at the IPC Jakarta would like to join with so many others who know Mr. Menon in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. We pray God Almighty to give his soul Rest in Peace and to give his daughter courage, strength and support in facing this sudden loss.
MARKET REPORT
BLACK PEPPER: The price at producing countries remained unchanged, with the exception of Sri Lanka. A marginal increase in dollar price in Sarawak was due to strengthening of Malaysian Ringgit against US Dollar. In Sri Lanka, pepper prices at growing areas decreased by 3%.
WHITE PEPPER: In Bangka, white pepper prices increased marginally by 1%, while in other sources the prices were reported stable.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM INDONESIA:
Based on data received from the Central Agency for Statistics, during 2012 Indonesia exported 62,608 mt of pepper valued at USD 423.48 million, comprising 49,500 mt of black and 13,108 mt of white pepper, as against 64,000 mt estimated earlier. When compared with exports of 36,487 mt worth USD 214.68 million in 2011, the export has registered a substantial increase of 72% in volume and 97% in value, which is the highest achieved in the history of the pepper industry in Indonesia. Out of the total export of black pepper a volume of 43,225 mt was shipped from Lampung. Bangka province, the traditional source of white pepper for Indonesia shipped only 7,291 mt, or 56% in 2012. The United States remained the main destination, importing around 37% of pepper shipped from Indonesia, followed by Vietnam 27%. India also imported significant quantity of pepper from Indonesia.
