BLACK PEPPER: The market was relatively unchanged, with a slight mixed response. A marginal increase in local price took place in Sarawak. In Brazil, a marginal decrease was recorded due to weakening of local currency against US Dollar. In India, although the harvest has completed, the market remained quiet as indicated by volume of contract traded in the Commodity Exchange. This situation reflected the lower availability of material, not as good as projected earlier. In Lampung, prices remained unchanged, with very limited activity in view of tight stock in the local market. There is no catch crop is reported this year and lower crop is anticipated to begin in June/July.
WHITE PEPPER: A marginal increase of white pepper price was recorded in Bangka. Local prices also took place in Sarawak, while in Vietnam, the price of white pepper was reported stable.
EXPORT AND IMPORT PEPPER BY CHINA:
China is one of the important pepper producing countries and Hainan, the southernmost province is the major pepper growing areas in China, with annual production of about 25-30,000 tons, mostly White Pepper. Around 10 - 15% of total pepper production of China has been exported to USA, Europe and neighbouring countries. China also imports around 3,000 mt of pepper annually with Vietnam, which is the major supplier to China. It is interesting to note that export of pepper from China decreased during the last three years to 2,560 mt from 4,670 mt in 2010, even substantially lower when compared to export of 10,150 mt reported in 2006; while imports were recorded increasing trend from year to year and in 2012 import of China has crossed the export.
