MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response as only Indonesia was reported with an increase. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with 1% deficit as compared to the previous week to an average of USD 4,381 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% respectively when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 1,963 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,758 per Mt for white pepper. The increase of Indonesian pepper could be contributed to the strengthening of Indonesian Rupiah against US Dollar (IDR 14,770 @ USD 1), an appreciation by 1% recorded. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported with 2% and 1% deficit respectively as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 2,349 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,753 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported stable with a marginal increase to an average of USD 2,096 per Mt for black pepper and USD 2,830 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with 2% deficit as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 3,094 per Mt.
International market also showed a mixed response as only Indonesia was reported with an increase. India black pepper was reported with the same 1% deficit as compared to the previous week to an average of USD 4,654 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% respectively when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 2,401 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,411 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were also reported stable and unchanged.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY SWITZERLAND
Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a country situated in the confluence of western, central and southern Europe. Switzerland is a landlocked country bordered by Italy, France, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Switzerland was reported to actively import pepper from other pepper producing countries for the purpose of domestic consumption as well as re-export.
In 2018, Switzerland was reported to have imported a total of 853 Mt which 54% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, Switzerland's import of pepper increased by 14%, totaling at 974 Mt. As of July 2020, Switzerland was reported to have imported a total of 526 Mt of which 75 Mt went for re-export purposes. The ratio of Switzerland's import and export during 2018-July 2020 are 7:1, 9:1, 7:1 respectively. The top five countries of origins of Switzerland pepper both for whole and ground as of July 2020 were reported to be Germany with 127 Mt (Contributed to 24% of the total Switzerland's import as of July 2020), Viet Nam with 112 Mt (21%), Brazil with 108 Mt (21%), Indonesia with 51 Mt (10%) and Sri Lanka with 21 Mt (4%).
In 2018, Switzerland was reported to have exported a total of 114,342 Kg of pepper which 13% or 14,480 Kg of it comprised of whole pepper and 87% or 99,862 Kg of it ground pepper. Switzerland on average exported a total of 9,529 Kg per month in 2018 which peaked in October with 18,750 Kg. The total revenue of Switzerland's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 2.6 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by Switzerland at USD 17 per Kg for whole pepper and USD 23 per Kg for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw a decrease in term of quantity of pepper exported by Switzerland. Switzerland was reported to have exported a total of 108,933 Kg of which 12% or 13,192 Kg of it comprised of whole pepper and 88% or 95,741 Kg of it ground pepper, recording a decrease of 5% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by Switzerland in 2019 was reported to be 9,078 Kg per month which peaked in October with 13,001 Kg. In accordance with decreasing in term of quantity, Switzerland's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 13% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 2.3 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Switzerland at USD 15 per Kg for whole pepper and USD 21 per Kg for ground pepper or a decrease of 15% and 8% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of July 2020, Switzerland was reported to have exported a total of 74,671 Kg which 14% or 10,809 Kg of it comprised of whole pepper and 86% or 63,862 Kg of it ground pepper. Thus, recording an increase of 23% when compared to the same period in 2019. As of July 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by Switzerland was reported to have reached USD 1.4 Million, recording an increase of 12% as compared to the same period in 2019. The average price of the total pepper exported by Switzerland as of July 2020 was reported at USD 17 per Kg for whole pepper and USD 20 per Kg for ground pepper.
Pepper from Switzerland is traded worldwide with most of them being European countries. As of July 2020, Switzerland's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper were reported to be Germany with 36,025 Kg (a decrease of 3% as compared to the same period in 2019), Netherlands with 14,556 Kg (an increase of 89%), Belgium with 5,680 Kg (an increase of 4,228 Kg), Italy with 3,970 Kg (an increase of 3,620 Kg) and Austria with 2,532 Kg (a decrease of 16%). The decrease of Switzerland's pepper export to Germany was the result of Germany directly imported pepper from producing country such as Viet Nam (an increase of 7% or 404 Mt as compared to period as of June 2019). Whilst, the decrease of Switzerland's pepper export to Austria was the result of Austria prefers imported pepper from Spain and United of Kingdom (an increase of 3 Mt & 4 Mt respectively as compared to period as of May 2019).
