Except in Sri Lanka, price at most producing countries decreased with relatively stable price reported in India and Malaysia. In Indonesia and Vietnam, the prices were reported to have further decreased.
Market in Lampung and Bangka is very quiet during the week, since farmers are not interested to bring pepper to market at current prevailing low price level. They release a minimum quantity only to meet immediate cash needs. It was reported that currently heavy rains accompanied with strong winds occur almost every day in Lampung and Bangka. It is estimated that this situation will continue until November, even until end of the year. If this climate continues, 2017 pepper crop in Indonesia is estimated to be significantly lower than projected earlier. In the last 44th IPC Session, overall production of pepper in Indonesia in 2017 was projected at the level of 74,500 Mt.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM VIETNAM:
Production and export of pepper in Vietnam would be higher this year. In the last 44th Session of IPC held in August 2016, it was reported that production of pepper in Vietnam in 2016 would be 140,000 Mt. Together with import from other sources, it is estimated a volume of 150,000 Mt of pepper will be exported from Vietnam. During January - August 2016 Vietnam has shipped 136,000Mt valued at US$ US$ 1.1 billion as against 105,000 Mt worth US$ 987.7 million in the same period lat year, recording an increase of 30% in quantity and 12% in value. Highest exports achieved this year were in March and April 2016.
