MARKET REPORT

As Christians around the world celebrate Christmas amid the global pandemic of Corona Virus, Market this week showed a rather stable outlook with only Viet Nam and Sri Lanka were reported with a decrease. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported stable at an average of USD 4,530 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported stable averaging at USD 2,341 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,077 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were also reported stable at an average of USD 2,309 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,782 per Mt for white pepper. In contrast, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported with 4% and 8% deficit when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,248 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,088 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with 3% deficit as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,816 per Mt. China white pepper was reported stable and was traded at an average of USD 5,088 per Mt locally.

International market was also reported stable as India remained at an average of USD 4,801 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported stable averaging at USD 2,838 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,776 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Malaysia black and white pepper as well as Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. China white pepper was reported stable with a marginal decrease and was traded at an average of USD 5,288 per Mt.

EXPORT OF PEPPER BY GERMANY

Germany, Officially the Federal Republic of Germany is a country in Central and Western Europe. Furthermore, Germany is one of the countries in Europe that imports quite a lot of pepper from various pepper producing countries whether for its domestic consumption or for re-export.

In 2018, Germany was reported to have imported a total of 30,565 Mt which 91% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, Germany's import of pepper increased by 10%, totaling at 33,553 Mt. As of September 2020, Germany was reported to have imported a total of 23,800 Mt of which 10,491 Mt went for re-export purposes. The ratio of Germany's import and export during 2018 - September 2020 were 2:1 respectively. The top five countries of origins for Germany's pepper as of September 2020 were reported to be Viet Nam with 9,983 Mt (Contributed to 42% of the total pepper imported by Germany as of September 2020), Brazil with 9,473 Mt (40%), Indonesia with 1,259 Mt (5%), India with 858 Mt (4%) and Cambodia with 720 Mt (3%).

In 2018, Germany was reported to have exported a total of 15,304 Mt of pepper which 57% or 8,722 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 43% or 6,582 Mt of it ground pepper. Germany on average exported a total of 1,275 Mt per month in 2018 which peaked in March with 1,600 Mt. The total revenue of Germany's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 89.5 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by Germany at USD 5,246 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 6,655 per Mt for ground pepper.

Year 2019 saw a decrease in term of quantity of pepper exported by Germany. Germany was reported to have exported a total of 13,980 Mt of which 61% or 8,480 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 39% or 5,500 Mt of it ground pepper, recording a decrease of 9% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by Germany in 2019 was reported to be 1,165 Mt per month which peaked in May with 1,749 Mt. In accordance with decreasing in term of quantity, Germany's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 26% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 66.4 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Germany at USD 4,157 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,675 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease of 21% and 15% respectively as compared to 2018.

As of September 2020, Germany was reported to have exported a total of 10,491 Mt which 61% or 6,445 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 39% or 4,046 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 5% when compared to the same period in 2019. As of September 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by Germany was reported to have reached USD 48.8 Million, recording a decrease of 7% as compared to the same period in 2019. The average price of the total pepper exported by Germany as of September 2020 was reported to be USD 4,092 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,548 per Mt for ground pepper.

Pepper from Germany is traded worldwide with most of them being European countries. As of September 2020, Germany's top 5 country destinations for its pepper were reported to be Poland with 2,437 Mt (a decrease of 13% as compared to the same period in 2019), Austria with 1,769 Mt (an increase of 7%), France with 1,239 Mt (a decrease of 10%), Netherlands with 627 Mt (an increase of 80%) and United States of America with 584 Mt (a decrease of 45%). The decrease of Germany's pepper export to United States of America was the result of United States of America directly imported pepper from producing country such as Indonesia (an increase of 16% or 601 Mt as compared to the same period in 2019).
