MARKET REPORT

Market showed a mixed response. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported stable, averaging at USD 5,019 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% respectively when compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 3,299 per Mt for black pepper and USD 6,077 per Mt for white pepper. The increase of Indonesian price could be contributed to the strengthening of Indonesian Rupiah against the USD Dollar (IDR 14,398 @USD 1), recording a 1% appreciation. Malaysia black and white peppers were reported stable, averaging at USD 3,293 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,931 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam farm gate price of black pepper was reported with 1% deficit as compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 2,666 per Mt. Whilst, Viet Nam white pepper was reported stable, averaging at USD 4,303 per Mt. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with 1% deficit as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 3,374 per Mt.

International market also showed a a mixed response as India black pepper was reported stable, averaging at USD 5,291 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% respectively when compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 3,930 per Mt for black pepper and USD 7,006 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white peppers were reported with an increase of 1% respectively as compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 4,692 per Mt for black pepper and USD 6,196 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported stable with a slight decreasing trend, averaging at USD 3,595 per Mt, USD 3,635 per Mt and USD 5,330 per Mt respectively.

IMPORT OF PEPPER BY GREECE

Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic is a country located in Southeast Europe. Greece is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It shares land borders with Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Greece actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2019, Greece was reported to have imported a total 1,601 Mt of pepper which 70% or 1,119 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 30% or 482 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average import of pepper by Greece in 2019 was reported to be 133 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in January with 374 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper import by Greece in 2019 was reported to be as high as USD 4.2 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Greece at USD 2,822 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 2,329 Per Mt for ground pepper.

Year 2020 saw a decreasing trend in term of quantity of pepper imported by Greece. Greece was reported to have imported a total of 1,188 Mt which 84% or 998 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 16% or 189 Mt of it was ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 26% when compared to 2019. The average pepper import by Greece in 2020 was reported at 99 Mt per month which peaked in March with 170 Mt. In accordance with decreasing in term of quantity, Greece's expenditure of pepper import was reported with a decrease of 10% to a total of USD 3.8 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Greece at USD 2,725 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,885 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease by 3% for whole pepper and an increase of USD 3,555 per Mt for ground pepper as compared to 2019.

As of February 2021, Pepper import by Greece was reported with an increase of 99% as compared to the same period in 2020, totaling at 221 Mt which comprised of 88% or 195 Mt of whole pepper and 12% or 26 Mt of ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper import by Greece as of February 2021 was reported with an increase by 82% as compared to the same period in 2020, totaling at USD 815,000. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Greece at USD 3,421 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,659 per Mt for ground pepper.

The top five countries of origins of Greece's pepper as of February 2021 were reported to be Viet Nam with 170 Mt (an increase of 108 Mt as compared to the same period in 2020), India with 14 Mt (a decrease of 4%), Netherlands with 12 Mt (an increase of 63%), Germany with 7 Mt (an increase of 5 Mt) and Romania with 5 Mt (2020 n.a). The decrease of Greece's import from India could be contributed to Greece preference of importing from other origin such as Viet Nam (an increase of 108 Mt as compared to the same period in 2020).
