Except in Sarawak, pepper price in most producing countries increased this week. After continuous decrease in the last few months pepper price in Indonesia showed an increasing trend. Last week local price of pepper in Indonesia increased marginally and this week the price increased further by 9% for black in Lampung and 2% for white in Bangka. FOB price at the sources also increased. In Vietnam, the price increased by 2-3%. Only white pepper at domestic market reported to remain unchanged. In dollar term however the price decreased marginally due to weakening of Vietnam Dong against US Dollar. In India, price increased was also recorded and In Sri Lanka the price was relatively stable. In China, the price tended to increase also. On an average however, this weekÔÇÖs price is still slightly lower.
Incredible price changes were reported in Sarawak. During last week, local price of black and white pepper decreased by 14% and 11% respectively, whereas price at other source tended to increase. This week the price decreased further by 10% for black and 4% for white. Pepper prices in Sarawak also expected to be increasing trend because no crop from any producing country is expected until January next year. In addition to the real decrease a weakening of Malaysian Ringgit against US Dollar is also contribute to the decrease in pepper prices.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY FRANCE:
Pepper imported by France is increasing year by year. In 2015 France imported 10,200 Mt of pepper (7,520 Mt of whole and 2,680 Mt of ground pepper), an increase of around 600 Mt (7%) from 9,600 Mt in 2014. In 2016 import by France is estimated to increase further as indicated by total pepper imported up to September 2016.
During January - September 2016, France has imported 9,170 Mt (6,863 Mt of whole and 2,307 Mt of ground pepper), recording an increase of 19% when compared with import of 7,674 Mt (5,549 Mt of whole and 2,125 Mt of ground pepper) during same period in 2015. Vietnam was the main supplier of pepper for France, replacing Brazil to the second position. Out of 9,170 Mt of pepper imported by France a volume of 2,320 Mt (25%) was from Vietnam; while Brazil supplied 1,980 Mt (22%). Indonesia also supplied a significant quantity of 1,700 Mt (19%) into France during the first nine months of this year.
