Domestic market of black pepper has shown a mixed response during the week. In India and Sri Lanka, the price of black pepper increased; while in Vietnam decreased. In Lampung and Sarawak the prices were relatively stable. In Kochi, local price of Malabar black increased by 2%. Strong local currency against US Dollar has contributed to the increase. Fob prices of black in Lampung, Sarawak and HCMC were reported unchanged. In respect of white pepper, the price was relatively stable at all origins.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED STATES:
In March 2014, the United States imported 6,160 mt of pepper (4,703 mt of black, 321 mt of white and 1,136 mt of ground pepper), an increase of 22% from 5,046 mt imported in March 2013 and 80% from 3,422 mt in the previous month (February 2014). The import was also higher when compared to import of 5,241 mt in January 2014. Vietnam supplied more than 50% of the United States' import in March 2014. During January - March 2014 the United States imported 14,823 mt (10,411 mt of black, 1,238 mt of white and 3,174 mt of ground pepper). Total import in the first quarter was however still lower from the total import in the same period last year. Import of whole black and ground pepper decreased; while import of white pepper was relatively stable. Brazil, Vietnam and Indonesia were the main sources of black pepper for USA. Import of white pepper was mostly from Indonesia, while import of ground pepper from India..
