In Brazil, the price increased further, although the harvest is almost completed and new material has entered in the market. Local price of Brazilian black in Belem was BRL 14 per kg increased from BRL 13.7 last week. Fob price also increased to USD 7,400 per mt from USD 7,200 at the last week-s close. In India pepper prices continued to increase with the spot surged ahead recording the historic high of INR 452 per kg on Thursday, 24 October. Tight stock coupled with strong domestic demand and firmer markets in other origins has kept the prices surging. In Vietnam, local price of black pepper increased by 3%; while fob price were reported stable. Marginal increase was also recorded in Malaysia and Sri Lanka; while in Lampung and Bangka the price were relatively stable.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM SRI LANKA:
It was reported that production of pepper in Sri Lanka is estimated to increase this year. The increase was also indicated by the higher export performance achieved in 2013. During July 2013, Sri Lanka exported 2,601 mt of pepper as against 2,143 mt exported in July 2012, registering an increase of 20%. Export in July has also shown a significant increase from exports in previous months. During January - July 2013, total export of pepper from Sri Lanka was 9,165 mt. When compared to exports in the same period last year, there was a significant increase of almost 90%. Up to December 2013, total export from Sri Lanka is estimated to cross the level of 14,000 mt.
