MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed mixed responses with Malaysia and China origins recorded decrease. In local market, Malabar black pepper was traded with an increase of 2% as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 4,717 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper was reported with an increase of 3% and 1% respectively as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 1,748 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,033 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysian black and white pepper was traded with 1% decrease as opposed to the previous week at an average of USD 1,865 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,334 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper was reported steady and unchanged. Sri Lanka black pepper reported an increase of 1% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 3,858 per Mt, recording the highest average price of the year. Whilst, China white pepper was reported with a 1% deficit as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 4,388 per Mt.
In international market, the trend also showed mixed responses as only China recorded decrease. FOB price of India black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,999 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper was reported with the same 3% and 1% increase respectively as opposed to the previous week with an average of USD 2,164 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,613 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be traded stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l, and Viet Nam white pepper were also reported stable and unchanged. China was reported with the same 1% deficit as opposed to the previous week with an average of USD 4,588 per Mt.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY BULGARIA
Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria is a country in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. Furthermore, Bulgaria actively export pepper to various countries.
In 2017, Bulgaria was reported to have exported a total of 1,093 Mt of pepper from which 7% or 80 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 93% or 1,013 Mt of it ground pepper. Bulgaria on average exported a total of 91 Mt per month in 2017. The total revenue of Bulgaria export in 2017 was reported to be as high as USD 2.6 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Bulgaria at USD 5,310 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 2,200 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2018 saw an increasing trend in term of quantity of pepper exported by Bulgaria. Bulgaria was reported to have exported a total of 1,165 Mt of which 10% or 119 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 90% or 1,046 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording a 7% increase in term of quantity as compared to the same period in 2017. The average export of pepper by Bulgaria was reported to be at 97 Mt per month. Although increasing in term of quantity, Bulgaria's revenue from pepper export was reported to have declined by 3% to a total of USD 2.5 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Bulgaria at USD 2,851 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 2,143 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease by 46% and 3% respectively as compared with 2017.
As of August 2019, Bulgaria was reported to have exported a total of 703 Mt which comprised of 31 Mt of whole pepper and 672 Mt of ground pepper. Thus, recording a 13% decrease when compared to the same period in 2018. By the end of August 2019, the total revenue of pepper export by Bulgaria was reported to have reached USD 1.4 Million, recording a decrease by 3% as compared to the same period in 2018. The average price of the total pepper exported by Bulgaria as of August 2019 was reported at USD 3,365 per Mt for whole pepper and 2,073 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper exports from Bulgaria are mostly traded in European Countries. As of August 2019, Bulgaria's top 5 Country destinations for its pepper were reported to be Romania with 264 Mt (an increase of 29% as compared with the same period in 2018), Hungary with 190 Mt (a decrease of 13%), Poland with 80 Mt (a decrease of 5%), North Macedonia with 39 Mt (a decrease of 40%) and Greece with 32 Mt (a decrease of 5%). The decrease of export to Hungary was the result of Hungary start to shift importing pepper from other re-export pepper countries in Europe such as Poland (an increase by 77 Mt or 135% as compared with the same period in 2018) and Austria (an increase by 15 Mt or 16%).
