IMPORT OF PEPPER BY PORTUGAL
Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic is a country located mostly on the Iberian Peninsula, in the southwestern Europe. It is westernmost sovereign state of mainland Europe, being bordered to the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and east by Spain. Furthermore, Portugal actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Portugal was reported to have imported a total 537 Mt of pepper which 56% or 301 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 44% or 235 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average import of pepper by Portugal in 2018 was reported to be 45 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in October with 82 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper import by Portugal was reported to be as high as USD 4.4 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Portugal at USD 6,079 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 11,210 Per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw a decreasing trend in term of quantity of pepper imported by Portugal. Portugal was reported to have imported a total of 516 Mt which 45% or 230 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 55% or 286 Mt of it was ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 4% when compared to the same period in 2018. The average pepper imported by Portugal was reported at 43 Mt per month which peaked in February with 66 Mt. In relation with decreasing in term of quantity, Portugal's expenditure of pepper import was reported with a decrease of 7% to a total of USD 4.1 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Portugal at USD 6,989 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 8,866 per Mt for ground pepper or an increase by 15% for whole pepper and a decrease by 21% for ground pepper as compared to 2018.
As of June 2020, Pepper import by Portugal was reported with a decrease of 5% as compared to the same period in 2019, totaling at 277 Mt which comprised of 47% or 131 Mt of whole pepper and 53% or 146 Mt of ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper import by Portugal as of June 2020 was reported with a decrease of 4% when compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling at USD 2.1 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Portugal at USD 6,592 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 8,491 per Mt for ground pepper.
The top five countries of origins of Portugal's pepper as of June 2020 were reported to be France with 117 Mt (an increase of 23% as compared to the same period in 2019), Spain with 66 Mt (a decrease of 36%), Viet Nam with 48 Mt (an increase of 33 Mt), Germany with 26 Mt (an increase of 36%) and Indonesia with 15 Mt (2019 n.a). The decreased of Portugal import from Spain could be contributed to Portugal preference of importing from origins countries which offered more competitive price such as Viet Nam (an increase by 33 Mt as compared to the same period in 2019).
