MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed mixed response. In local market, Malabar black pepper was traded with a 4% deficit as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 4,254 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with a 1% deficit when compared to the previous week with an average of USD 1,636 per Mt. Whilst, Indonesia white pepper was reported stable with an average of USD 3,307 Mt. Malaysian black and white pepper was reported stable and unchanged at an average of USD 2,002 per Mt and USD 3,517 per Mt respectively. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper was also reported stable and unchanged averaging at USD 1,702 per Mt and USD 2,626 per Mt respectively. Sri Lanka black pepper steadily moving up, in local market it recorded an increase by 2% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,654 per Mt. Whilst, China white pepper was reported stable with an average of USD 4,600 per Mt.
In international market, the trend also showed mixed response. FOB price of India black pepper was reported with the same 4% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,536 per Mt. Following the trend in local market Indonesia black pepper was also reported with a 1% deficit when compared to the previous week with an average of USD 2,036 per Mt. Whilst, Indonesia white pepper was reported stable with an average of USD 3,919 per Mt. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be traded stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported with a decrease by 3%, 3% and 2% respectively as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 2,250 per Mt, USD 2,315 per Mt and USD 3,400 per Mt respectively. China reported a stable international trade for its white pepper with an average of USD 4,800 per Mt.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY AUSTRIA
Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a land-locked country in Central Europe composed of nine federated states. Austria actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2017, Austria was reported to have imported a total 3,375 Mt of pepper which 84% or 2,842 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 16% or 533 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average import by Austria in 2017 was reported to be 281 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in October with 415 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper imported by Austria was reported to be as high as USD 24.8 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Austria at USD 6,892 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 9,816 Per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2018 saw an increasing trend in term of quantity of pepper imported by Austria. Austria was reported to have recorded a total of 3,565 Mt which comprised of 82% or 2,924 Mt of whole pepper and 18% or 641 Mt of ground pepper. Thus, recording a 6% increase as compared to the same period in 2017. On average Austria was reported to have imported at 297 Mt per month which peaked in March with 513 Mt. Although Increasing in terms of quantity, Austria's expenditure from pepper import was reported to have declined by 27% to a total of USD 18.2 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Austria at USD 4,422 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 8,243 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease by 36% and 16% respectively as compared with 2017.
Pepper import by Austria as of June 2019 was reported with an increase of 14% as compared with the same period in 2018, totalling at 1,876 Mt which comprised of 1,507 Mt of whole pepper and 370 Mt of ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper import by Austria as of June 2019 decreased by 21% as compared to the same period on the previous year, totalling at USD 7.6 Million.
The top five countries of origins of Austria's pepper both for whole and ground as of June 2019 were reported to be Germany with 1,582 Mt (an increase of 25% as compared with the same period in 2018), the Netherlands with 203 Mt (a decrease of 37%), India with 53 Mt (an increase of 80%), China with 19 Mt and Spain with 4 Mt. The significant decreased of Austria import from the Netherlands could be contributed that Austria preferred to shift import from origin country such as India (an increase by 23 Mt as compared to the same period in 2018).
