The market of pepper was very quiet during the week and price decreased further at almost all origins. A significant decrease of black pepper prices were recorded in local market in Lampung and Vietnam by 8% and 7%, respectively. Trading activities however was very limited, since farmers in Lampung continued to hold onto their limited stock, expecting a better price. In Sarawak, local price of black and white pepper decreased by 5% and for FOB price decreased by 2%. In Sri Lanka a marginal decrease of 1% was also recorded this week. White pepper prices in Bangka and China were relatively stable.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED STATES:
The United States of America imported 80,000 Mt of pepper in 2015 valued at US$ 752 million, consisting of 53,000 Mt black, 5,500 Mt white and 21,500 Mt of ground pepper, recording an increase of 17% in quantity from 69,000 Mt worth US$ 563 million ( 49,000 Mt black, 5,000 Mt white and 15,000 Mt of ground pepper) in 2014. A substantial increase of 45% was recorded in ground pepper imports. Unit value of pepper imported by the United States in 2015 was US$ 9,400 per Mt as against US$ 8,200 per Mt in 2014. High import while high prices prevail reflected the high real demand for pepper in the country. In 2016, the import is estimated to remain high with a marginal decrease as indicated by total import achieved during January - August this year. During the first eight month of the year United States has imported 52,340 Mt as against 53,700 Mt of pepper in the same period last year, showing a marginal decrease of 3%. Vietnam was the main source, supplying 55% of total pepper import into the United States in January - August 2016.
