Except in India, the market continued to show decreasing trend, particularly black pepper. In Lampung, Sarawak and Sri Lanka the price of black pepper decreased compared to the previous week with the biggest drop in Sarawak Malaysia by 6%. Current harvest in Sarawak, Ramadhan festival and weakening of local currency against US Dollar in these counties has contributed for further decrease. Local price of black pepper in Viet Nam also decreased marginally, by 1%, but for FOB price was reported stable. In the case of white pepper however, the price in Bangka, HCM City and China it was reported stable. In Viet Nam trading was not brisk as producers continued to hold material, expecting to receive better price

Pepper harvest in Indonesia will take place in July/August. The output is anticipated to be not as good as estimated earlier. Erratic weather in some producing areas was the main reason for the situation. New York price for Lampung Black (ASTA) this week was reported $ 3,200 MT.


EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM VIET NAM

Viet Nam is considered to be as the number one exporter of pepper in the world with a high number of 215,183 Mt in 2017 which was 20% up compared to the previous year with only 179,233 Mt. The increase in export is in line with the increase in production. To meet export demand, Viet Nam also imported significant quantity from Cambodia and Indonesia. The increasing trend of export by Viet Nam is estimated to continue in 2018, In Q1 Viet Nam is reported to have exported 60,033 Mt which has increased 17.5% compared to the same period last year, though in term of value it decreased for about 31.4%. Considering low price currently, it was reported that VPA considered to cut down their pepper area, particularly for unproductive area
