The market showed a positive change during the week; where prices of black pepper at almost all origins increased. In India, local price of Malabar black increased from INR 377per Kg last week to INR 382 this week. In Lampung, black pepper increased by IDR 2,500 to IDR 33,000 per Kg locally this week. Similarly in Vietnam, local price of black pepper increased by VND 1,000 per Kg this week. Marginal increase is also taken place in Sri Lanka; but in dollar terms the price decreased due to weakening of Sri Lankan Rupees against US dollar. In Sarawak, the price was reported stable.

In the case of white pepper, the prices were relatively stable.


IMPORT OF PEPPER BY UNITED KINGDOM:

In 2017 import of pepper into United Kingdom decreased by 9% from 14,300 Mt (7,450 Mt of whole and 6,850 Mt of ground pepper) in 2016 to 12,900 Mt (4,550 Mt of whole and 8,350 Mt of ground pepper) in 2017. Import of whole pepper decreased by 39% and for ground pepper increased by 23%.

During January - June 2018, total import of pepper into United Kingdom was 6,000 Mt, a decrease of 5% from import in the same period last year (6,300 Mt). Vietnam and Netherlands were the main suppliers for the United Kingdom, contributing more than 50% of the UK's total import. Import of whole pepper in the first six months decreased by 14%, while import of ground pepper increased marginally by 1%. Out of the total import almost 70% was ground pepper.
