MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed mixed responses with India and China recorded decrease. In local market, Malabar black pepper was traded negatively with a 1% deficit as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 4,647 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with an increase of 4% as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 1,702 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported stable with an average of USD 3,014 per Mt. Malaysian black and white pepper was traded steady at an average of USD 1,878 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,380 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper was also reported steady and relatively unchanged. Sri Lanka black pepper showed a strong outlook with an increase of 8% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 3,825 per Mt, recording the highest average price of the year. Whilst, China white pepper was reported with a 1% deficit as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 4,425 per Mt.
In international market, the trend also showed mixed responses with only India and China recorded decrease. FOB price of India black pepper was reported with the same 1% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,926 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with the same 4% increase as opposed to the previous week with an average of USD 2,111 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported steady with an average of USD 3,591 per Mt. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be traded stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l, and Viet Nam white pepper were also reported stable, averaging at USD 2,320 per Mt, USD 2,385 per Mt and USD 3,470 per Mt respectively. China was reported with a 1% deficit as opposed to the previous week with an average of USD 4,625 per Mt.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY ECUADOR
Ecuador, Officially the Republic of Ecuador is a country in northern western South America, bordered by Colombia and Peru. Though in a smaller scale, Ecuador is also one of pepper producing country. Thus, Ecuador is also reported to export a quite significant amount of pepper throughout the world.
In 2017, Ecuador was reported to have exported a total of 4,004 Mt of pepper from which 99.7% or 3,992 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 0.3% or 12 Mt of it ground pepper. Ecuador on average exported a total of 334 Mt per month in 2017. The total revenue of Ecuador export in 2017 was reported to be as high as USD 14.1 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Ecuador at USD 3,520 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 6,333 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2018 saw an increasing trend in term of quantity of pepper exported by Ecuador. Ecuador was reported to have recorded a total of 4,433 Mt of pepper of which 99.6% or 4,415 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 0.4% or 18 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording an 11% increase in term of quantity as compared to the same period in 2017. The average export of pepper by Ecuador was reported to be at 369 Mt per month. Although increasing in term of quantity, Ecuador's revenue from pepper export was reported to have declined by 17% to a total of USD 11.6 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Ecuador at USD 2,588 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 14,500 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease by 26% for whole pepper and an increase by 129% for ground pepper as compared with 2017.
As of August 2019, Ecuador was reported to have exported a total of 2,107 Mt which comprised of 2,095 Mt of whole pepper and 12 Mt of ground pepper. Thus, recording a 5% decrease when compared to the same period in 2018. By the end of August 2019, the total revenue of pepper export by Ecuador was reported to have reached USD 5.0 Million, recording a decrease by 22% as compared to the same period in 2018. The average price of the total pepper exported by Ecuador as of August 2019 was reported at USD 2,413 per Mt for whole pepper and 1,750 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper exports from Ecuador are mostly traded in United States of America, European Countries, and Asia. Furthermore, as of August 2019 Ecuador's top 5 Country destinations for its pepper were reported to be United States of America with 782 Mt (an increase of 6% as compared with the same period in 2018), India with 684 Mt (an increase of 36%), France with 179 Mt (a decrease of 9%), Argentina with 135 Mt (an increase of 73%) and Netherlands with 66 Mt (a decrease of 180%). The significant decrease of export to Netherlands was the result of Netherlands start to shift importing pepper from other pepper producing country such as Viet Nam (an increase by 1,416 Mt or 36% as compared with the same period in 2018) and Brazil (an increase by 495 Mt or 22%).
