MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response as only Indonesia was reported with an increase. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with 1% deficit when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,335 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% and 2% respectively as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,065 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,717 per Mt for white pepper. The increase of Indonesia pepper could be contributed to the strengthening of Indonesian Rupiah against US Dollar (IDR 14,529 @ USD 1), an appreciation by 1% recorded. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable with a marginal increase and was traded at an average of USD 2,123 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,569 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported stable at an average of USD 2,215 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,041 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with 1% deficit as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,899 per Mt. China white pepper was reported stable with a marginal increase and was traded at an average of USD 4,650 per Mt locally.
International market also showed a mixed response as India black pepper was reported with the same 1% deficit when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,603 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% and 2% respectively as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,520 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,369 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were also reported stable and unchanged. China white pepper was reported stable with a marginal increase and was traded at an average of USD 4,850 per Mt internationally.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY AUSTRIA
Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a land-locked country in Central Europe composed of nine federated states. Austria actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Austria was reported to have imported a total 3,565 Mt of pepper which 82% or 2,924 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 18% or 641 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average import of pepper by Austria in 2018 was reported to be 297 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in March with 513 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper import by Austria was reported to be as high as USD 18.2 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Austria at USD 4,422 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 8,243 Per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw an increasing trend in term of quantity of pepper imported by Austria. Austria was reported to have imported a total of 3,748 Mt which 81% or 3,050 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 19% or 698 Mt of it was ground pepper. Thus, recording an increase of 5% when compared to the same period in 2018. The average pepper imported by Austria in 2019 was reported at 312 Mt per month which peaked in August with 480 Mt. Although increasing in term of quantity, Austria's expenditure of pepper import was reported with a decrease of 17% to a total of USD 15.0 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Austria at USD 3,471 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 6,391 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease by 22% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of July 2020, Pepper import by Austria was reported with a decrease of 7% as compared to the same period in 2019, totaling at 2,002 Mt which comprised of 84% or 1,680 Mt of whole pepper and 16% or 322 Mt of ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper import by Austria as of July 2020 was reported with a decrease of 12% when compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling at USD 7.6 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Austria at USD 3,321 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 6,314 per Mt for ground pepper.
The top five countries of origins of Austria's pepper as of July 2020 were reported to be Germany with 1,788 Mt (a decrease of 2% as compared to the same period in 2019), Netherlands with 129 Mt (a decrease of 44%), India with 32 Mt (a decrease of 39%), Poland with 25 Mt (2019 n.a) and United Kingdom with 9 Mt (an increase of 5 Mt). The decreased of Austria import in 2020 could be contributed to the impact of global pandemic to the global trade.
