Except in Indonesia and China, the market was relatively stable during the week with an increase of 1% reported for India black pepper. At the beginning of the week the price of pepper in Kochi, India increased to INR 369 per Kg from INR 367 last week. But the price then decreased marginally to INR 368 on Wednesday. In Lampung and Bangka the price decreased compared to the previous week. Ramadhan Festival is likely to have contributed to the decrease. Due to immediate need cash flow, farmers have started selling part of their material which is expected to be harvested next month. In Viet Nam, local price of black pepper decreased marginally by 2%; while for white pepper was reported stable. FOB price in this source was also reported stable.


IMPORT OF PEPPER BY USA

As the most important single market for pepper, USA imported 78,272 MT in 2017 which was 4% higher more when compared to the previous year's import at 75,009 MT. When compared to the previous two years (2015), the import was 2,000 Mt lower. Viet Nam the main source of pepper supplied more than 50% of pepper USA's import. Other important suppliers were Brazil and Indonesia, contributing 16% and 14% respectively.

Out of the total pepper imported by USA around 75% was whole pepper either black or white pepper and the balance of 25% was ground pepper. Although total import increased in 2017, import of ground pepper however decreased by 18% from 21,500 Mt to 17,500 Mt. With the constant high demand of Pepper, USA continues to import large quantity of pepper in 2018 In the first quarter of 2018 USA imported 16,338 MT of pepper comprised 12,392 Mt of whole and 3,946 MT of ground pepper, as against 16, 415 Mt in the same period of last year. Import from Viet Nam and Brazil increased, but from Indonesia decreased significantly from 5,000 Mt to only 1,000 Mt.
