WPB Week #40/16, 2 - 7 October 2016
Local pepper prices in almost all producing countries were relatively stable throughout the week. A marginal decrease in dollar was due to weakening of local currencies against US Dollar. Trading activities at most origins were reported limited.
In Lampung, the market was very quiet. In addition of limited material available at farms, the low base price set by traders has led farmers withhold their limited material, expecting to get better price. During the week, local price of Lampung black pepper stood at the level of IDR 75,000 per Kg, a marginal decrease when compared to average price last week. However when compared to the price level in September 2015, which touched the highest level of IDR 125,000 per Kg, the prices has significantly decreased, although the pepper output for the year 2017 is likely to stay flat in 2017 as per the IPC projection during the last Session.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM BRAZIL:
In the last few years export of pepper from Brazil increased consistently from 29,130 Mt in 2012 to 38,040 Mt in 2015. This was possible due to increased production from 32,000 Mt in 2012 to 44,000 Mt in 2015. For the year 2016, as per the trade source, Brazil is expected to export 39,000 Mt to the world market.
Up to August 2016 (January-August), Brazil has realized export at the level of 17,300 Mt as against 17,800 Mt in the same period last year, recording a marginal decrease by 3%. Export in the first quarter was higher by 38%, but in the second quarter decreased by 39%. Even in the last two months (July-August 2016) the export was significantly lower when compared to export in July-August 2015. Observing export performance in the last five months, the target of Brazil to export 39,000 Mt may not be achieved, unless there will be a significant change in production and exports in the remaining months of this year.
It is noted that Germany and the United States was the main destinations for Brazilian Pepper. In the first eight months these two countries absorbed 56% (30% Germany and 26% USA) of total Pepper exported from Brazil, followed by France and Spain absorbing10% each. Mexico, Argentina and Netherlands absorbed 4% each.
