The market remained calm with a slight decreasing trend. Price decrease by 4% was reported in Sri Lanka. In Kochi and HCM City a marginal decrease of local price for black pepper was also recorded. In Indonesia and Malaysia, the price remained unchanged. In dollar terms however, a marginal decrease was recorded due to weakening of their local currencies against US dollar.

In Lampung and Bangka, holiday mood still exist during the week and the market continues to be quiet. There is no trading activity reported at domestic market. Limited raw material at farms as well as low price is the main reason for the current quiet situation. Production of pepper in Lampung and Bangka is anticipated to be more or less the same as last year. In Kalimantan and Sulawesi however, production of pepper is expected to remain good.


IMPORT OF PEPPER BY JAPAN

Japan imports pepper around 8-9,000 Mt annually. During 2017 a volume of 8,200 Mt of pepper was imported into Japan, comprising of 4,670 Mt of whole pepper and 3,530 Mt of ground pepper. Import in 2017 decreased by 6% from 8,740 Mt in 2016. Malaysia and Indonesia were the main sources for Japan, supplying 40% and 32% respectively of pepper into Japan in 2017. Viet Nam also supplied significant quantity of 18% to Japan.

During first four months of 2018 Japan has imported 2,800 Mt of pepper. As against 2,434 Mt of import in January – April 2017, an increase of 15% was recorded. Whole pepper increased by 4% mainly from Malaysia and ground pepper increased by 32%, mainly from Indonesia.
