MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed mixed response. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with 2% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,084 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 2% and 3% respectively as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 2,289 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,260 per Mt for white pepper, despite the weakening of Indonesian Rupiah against US Dollar. Malaysia black and white peppers in local market were reported stable at an average of USD 1,906 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,269 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 2,072 per Mt whilst Viet Nam white pepper was reported stable and unchanged. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with 2% deficit when compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,600 per Mt. Whilst, China white pepper traded at an average of USD 4,225 per Mt locally.
International market showed a similar trend as the local market. India black pepper was reported with the same 2% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,349 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 2% and 3% respectively as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,777 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,860 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white peppers were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l and 550 g/l were reported with 1% deficit respectively when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,380 per Mt and USD 2,461 per Mt respectively. In contrast, Viet Nam white pepper was reported with an increase of 4% as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 3,900 per Mt. China traded its white pepper at an average of USD 4,425 per Mt internationally.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY GERMANY
Germany, Officially the Federal Republic of Germany is a country in Central and Western Europe. Furthermore, Germany is one of the countries in Europe that imports quite a lot of pepper from various pepper producing countries whether for its domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Germany was reported to have imported a total 30,763 Mt of pepper which 91% or 28,027 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 9% or 2,736 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average import of pepper by Germany in 2018 was reported to be 2,564 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in November with 4,041 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper import by Germany was reported to be as high as USD 125.3 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Germany at USD 3,898 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,884 Per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw an increasing trend in term of quantity of pepper import by Germany. Germany was reported to have recorded a total of 33,551 Mt which 92% or 30,945 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 8% or 2,606 Mt of it was ground pepper. Thus, recording an increase of 9% when compared to the same period in 2018. The average pepper imported by Germany was reported at 2,796 Mt per month which peaked in June with 3,502 Mt. Although increasing in terms of quantity, Germany was reported to have spent 13% less on its pepper import, totaling at USD 109.3 Million, Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Germany at USD 3,150 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 4,545 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease by 19% and 23% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of April 2020, Pepper import by Germany was reported with a decrease of 2% as compared to the same period in 2019, totaling at 9,553 Mt which comprised of 92% or 8,797 Mt of whole pepper and 8% or 756 Mt of ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper import by Germany as of April 2020 was reported with a decrease by 17% when compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling at USD 27.8 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Germany at USD 2,775 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 4,484 per Mt for ground pepper.
The top five countries of origins of Germany's pepper as of April 2020 were reported to be Brazil with 4,147 Mt (a decrease of 17% as compared to the same period in 2019), Viet Nam with 3,706 Mt (an increase of 34%), Indonesia with 616 Mt (an increase of 0.5%), India with 377 Mt (a decrease of 15%) and Cambodia with 207 Mt (an increase of 104 Mt). The decreased of Germany import from Brazil and India could be contributed to Germany preference of importing from other origins countries which offered more competitive price such as Viet Nam (an increase by 949 Mt as compared to the same period in 2019) and Cambodia (an increase by 104 Mt).
