Pepper price in India remained high. Local price of Malabar black was recorded at the level of INR 697 (US$ 10.5) per Kg and US$ 10,680 per Mt FOB. Although production of pepper in Indonesia decreased this year, pepper price in Lampung and Bangka were reported decreased during the week. A marginal decrease was also recorded for domestic white pepper in Sarawak. In Sri Lanka, the price was reported to have increased marginally by 1% this week.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY UNITED KINGDOM:
In 2015 import of pepper into United Kingdom increased by 10% from 10,925 Mt (3,208 Mt of whole and 7,717 Mt of ground pepper) in 2014 to 12,039 Mt (4,012 Mt of whole and 8,027 Mt of ground pepper) in 2015. Import of whole pepper increased by 25% and for ground pepper 4%.
During January - June 2015, total import of pepper into United Kingdom was 4,883 Mt, registering an increase of 7% from import in the same period last year (4,567 Mt). Import of whole pepper decreased by 4%, while import of ground pepper increased by 14%. The significant increase in the import of ground pepper was mainly from Netherlands, a main pepper trading countries in Europe. Supply from producing countries was relatively stable during the first half of the year. Total import of United Kingdom in 2016 is estimated to be more or less same as last year. Since supply from India and Indonesia is estimated to be lower this year.
