Entering the second half of December, market activity was less as buyers have replenished their inventories ahead of the upcoming long holiday season. Local price of pepper in some sources decreased, except in Sarawak. While in Lampung and Bangka, the local prices were relatively stable. In dollar term however, the price decreased due to weakening of Indonesian Rupiah against US dollar. In Sarawak local prices increased marginally from MYR 27 and MYR 36.7 per Kg respectively for black and white pepper to MYR 27.5 and MYR 37.5 at the week-s close. Fob price was reported stable.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY JAPAN:
Japan is one of the important markets for pepper in East Asia. A volume of around 8-9,000 Mt is imported by Japan annually. During 2013 Japan imported 8,514 Mt of pepper, comprising of 4,895 Mt of whole pepper and 3,619 Mt of ground pepper, as against 8,130 Mt (4,605 Mt of whole and 3,526 Mt of ground pepper) imported during the year 2012. During January - October 2014, total import of pepper into Japan was 6,973 Mt (3,988 Mt of whole and 2,985 Mt of ground pepper). When compared to import in the same period last year, there was a decrease of around 3%. Malaysia remained the most important source of whole pepper for Japan in 2014, while for ground pepper was mostly imported from Indonesia. Monthly import figures of pepper by Japan during Jan-Oct 2014 is shown at the table below:
