MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response with only Indonesia black pepper was reported with a decrease. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% when compared to previous week at an average of USD 4,199 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with 4% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 2,026 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported stable averaging at USD 3,478 per Mt. The decrease of Indonesia black pepper price could be contributed to the harvest season currently ongoing, thus, pushing down the local price. Malaysia black and white peppers in local market were reported stable with a marginal increase at an average of USD 2,387 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,754 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 2% and 5% respectively when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 1,995 per Mt for black pepper and USD 2,829 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,864 per Mt.
International market also showed a mixed response as only India origin was reported with an increase. India black pepper was reported with the same increase of 1% when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,466 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with 4% deficit when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 2,472 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported steady averaging at USD 4,098 per Mt. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported stable with a marginal increase averaging at USD 2,430 per Mt, USD 2,511 per Mt and USD 3,950 per Mt respectively.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY TURKEY
Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental country located mainly on the Anatolian peninsula in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan Peninsula in Southern Europe. Furthermore, Turkey actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Turkey was reported to have imported a total of 3,678 Mt which 99.6% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, Turkey's import of pepper increased by 70%, totaling at 6,248 Mt. As of June 2020, Turkey was reported to have imported a total of 3,884 Mt of which 745 Mt went for re-export purposes. The ratio of Turkey's import and export during 2018-June 2020 are 19:1, 26:1 and 5:1 respectively. The top five countries of origins of Turkey pepper both for whole and ground as of June 2020 were reported to be Viet Nam with 2,387 Mt (Contributed to 61% of the total Turkey's import as of June 2020), Brazil with 1,255 Mt (32%), Madagascar with 108 Mt (3%), India with 78 Mt (2%) and Argentina with 26 Mt (1%).
In 2018, Turkey was reported to have exported a total of 197 Mt of pepper which 15% or 29 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 85% or 168 Mt of it ground pepper. Turkey on average exported a total of 16 Mt per month in 2018 which peaked in May with 24 Mt. The total revenue of Turkey's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 1.5 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by Turkey at USD 10,643 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 7,137 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw an increase in term of quantity of pepper exported by Turkey. Turkey was reported to have exported a total of 238 Mt of which 18% or 43 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 82% or 195 Mt of it ground pepper, recording an increase of 21% when compared with 2018. The average export of pepper by Turkey in 2019 was reported to be at 20 Mt per month which peaked in November with 36 Mt. Although increasing in terms of quantity, Turkey's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 2% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 1.4 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Turkey at USD 10,157 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,397 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease of 5% and 24% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of June 2020, Turkey was reported to have exported a total of 745 Mt which 77% or 576 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 23% or 169 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording a significant increase of 641 Mt when compared to the same period in 2019. In 2020, Turkey's export preference is to whole pepper instead of ground pepper. As of June 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by Turkey was reported to have reached USD 2.7 Million, recording a significant increase of USD 2.0 Million as compared to the same period in 2019. The increase of Turkey exports during May and June could be contributed to Turkey's government started a new normalization of export in June amid the global pandemic outbreak.

The average price of the total pepper exported by Turkey as of June 2020 was reported at USD 3,579 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 4,243 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper from Turkey is traded worldwide with mostly in Middle East countries. As of June 2020, Turkey's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper were reported to be Iraq with 228 Mt (an increase of 219 Mt as compared to the same period in 2019), United Kingdom with 129 Mt (an increase of 113 Mt), Syrian Arab Republic with 82 Mt ( 2019 n.a), United States of America with 61 Mt (an increase of 56 Mt) and Tunisia with 54 Mt (2019 n.a).
