MARKET REPORT
Market this week was reported with a positive outlook. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% when compared to previous week at an average of USD 4,245 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported stable with a marginal change at an average of USD 2,021 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported with an increase of 3% when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 3,570 per Mt. The increase of Indonesia white pepper continued to be contributed to the lack of supply whilst demand strong. Malaysia black and white peppers in local market were reported stable with a marginal increase to an average of USD 2,395 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,766 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 2,012 per Mt whilst Viet Nam white pepper was reported stable averaging at USD 2,830 per Mt. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with an increase of 2% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,917 per Mt. China white pepper traded at an average of USD 4,085 per Mt locally.
International market also showed a positive outlook as India black pepper was reported with the same increase of 1% when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,512 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported stable at an average of USD 2,466 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported with an increase of 2% when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 4,200 per Mt. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported with an increase of 2%, 2% and 1% respectively when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,470 per Mt, USD 2,551 per Mt and USD 3,990 per Mt respectively. China traded its white pepper at an average of USD 4,285 per Mt internationally.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY ITALY
Italy, officially the Italian Republic is a sovereign country consisting of a peninsula delimited by the Alps and surrounded by several islands. Italy is located in south-central Europe, and is considered part of Western Europe. Furthermore, Italy actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Italy was reported to have imported a total of 4,486 Mt which 84% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, Italy's import of pepper increased by 1%, totaling at 4,509 Mt. As of April 2020, Italy was reported to have imported a total of 1,487 Mt of which 181 Mt went for re-export purposes. The ratio of Italy's import and export during 2018-April 2020 are 6:1, 6:1 and 8:1 respectively. The top five countries of origins of Italy pepper both for whole and ground as of April 2020 were reported to be Viet Nam with 416 Mt (Contributed to 28% of the total Italy's import as of April 2020), Brazil with 311 Mt (21%), France with 309 Mt (21%), Ecuador with 100 Mt (7%) and Germany with 96 Mt (6%).
In 2018, Italy was reported to have exported a total of 765 Mt of pepper which 48% or 363 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 52% or 402 Mt of it ground pepper. Italy on average exported a total of 64 Mt per month in 2018 which peaked in January with 109 Mt. The total revenue of Italy's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 10.8 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by Italy at USD 20,626 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 8,420 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw a decrease in term of quantity of pepper exported by Italy. Italy was reported to have exported a total of 715 Mt of which 52% or 369 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 48% or 345 Mt of it ground pepper, recording a decrease of 7% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by Italy in 2019 was reported to be 60 Mt per month which peaked in June with 78 Mt. In accordance with the decreasing of quantity, Italy's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 21% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 8.5 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Italy at USD 17,700 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,894 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease of 14% and 30% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of April 2020, Italy was reported to have exported a total of 181 Mt which 51% or 93 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 49% or 89 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 29% when compared to the same period in 2019. As of April 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by Italy was reported to have reached USD 2.2 Million, recording a decrease of 20% as compared to the same period in 2019. The average price of the total pepper exported by Italy as of April 2020 was reported at USD 18,873 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,911 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper from Italy is traded worldwide. As of April 2020, Italy's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper were reported to be United Kingdom with 37 Mt (a decrease of 56% as compared to the same period in 2019), Australia with 26 Mt (an increase of 3%), United States of America with 20 Mt (an increase of 1%), China with 14 Mt (an increase of 6%) and Netherlands with 13 Mt (a decrease of 41%). The decrease of Italy's pepper export to United Kingdom was the result of United Kingdom directly imported pepper from producing country such as Viet Nam (an increase of 14% or 233 Mt as compared to the same period in 2019).
