WPB Week #50/15, 14-18 December 2015
In general the market was steady for last two weeks with limited trading for shipment and also because of few holidays and warehouse stock clearing. In India, Pepper price increased, while in Vietnam and Sri Lanka a marginal decrease was recorded. In Malaysia and Indonesia local prices were relatively stable. In dollar terms however, the price decreased by 2% due to weakening of local currencies against US dollar.
PEPPER FROM PORT OF MALAYSIA:
In 2014 Malaysia exported 13,600 Mt of Pepper, an increase of 13% from 12,100 Mt of export in 2013. It is interesting to note that starting from November monthly export from Malaysia decreased until new material from next harvest arrives in the market in May of following year. From November 2014 till April 2015 export of Pepper from Malaysia was very low, only 4,100 Mt as against 6,000 Mt in the same period of previous year. Low export during situation of high prevailing price level has proved that stock in the country was limited. Supported by better harvest however this year, total export of Pepper is expected to be higher in 2015. This is indicated by increased monthly export starting from May 2015.
Up to October 2015, Malaysia has exported 12,018 Mt of Pepper, comprising 11,025 Mt of whole and 993 Mt of ground Pepper as against 11,908 Ms in the same period last year. During the 43rd Session of IPC held in Mysore in India, Malaysia has targeted to export 14,500 Mt this year. Hence, in the remaining months of the year, export from Malaysia is expected to be around 2,500 Mt. Japan remained the most important market for Malaysian Pepper, absorbing around 19% and 61% of whole and ground Pepper respectively. Singapore, Taiwan, China, Vietnam and Korea also imported significant quantity of whole Pepper from Malaysia.
