The market showed a mixed response. In India and Sri Lanka, prices decreased; while in Lampung and Bangka were stable. In India, Malabar black has decreased by INR 5 per kg. In dollar terms the price decreased by 2%. It is understood that harvesting season in India is coming soon from December-January 2017 onwards and this is likely to be one of the factor influencing price trend In India. In Sri Lanka the price decreased marginally by 1%. Significant decrease was recorded in Sarawak. Local price of Sarawak pepper has decreased by 14% and 11% respectively for black and white pepper. FOB price decreased by 5 and 4% for black and white pepper respectively . In addition to the real decrease of Sarawak pepper a weakening of Malaysian Ringgit against US Dollar was contributing for the sharp decrease of pepper prices.

In 2015 Indonesia exported 58,075 Mt. of pepper (37,869 Mt. of black and 20,206 Mt of white pepper). The export recorded a substantial increase of around 67% from the export of 34,730 Mt in 2014. In 2016, export of pepper from Indonesia is estimated to decrease significantly, following a significant decrease of production this year, particularly black pepper in Lampung. Indication of the decrease is shown in table below. During January-July 2016, Indonesia exported 17,400 Mt of pepper (10,550 Mt of black and 6,850 Mt of white pepper) as against 20,900 MT, during the same month of 2015 (12,700 Mt of black and 8,200 Mt of white pepper) recording a decrease of 17%. Substantial decrease of export was recorded in July 2016, where pepper exported from Indonesia was only 1,741 Mt as against 6,198 Mt in July 2015. This also reflects supply of pepper from recent crop is not as good as expected earlier. Some sources also reported that export in August, September and October is also significantly lower compared to last year.

It is interesting to note that in 2015, Vietnam was the main destination for Indonesia, replacing the traditional market of the United States to the second position. Around 40% (22,700 Mt) of pepper from Indonesia was exported to Vietnam in 2015. In 2016 export of pepper from Indonesia to Vietnam decreased significantly.
