Pepper market was quiet during the week, except in Vietnam. The quiet market was due to limited stock available. Some activities were taken place in Vietnam in view of availability of new material from recent harvest. Under this situation, buyers tried to press the price down. However, supported by good holding capacity from higher price realised last year, farmers in Vietnam are not interested to release their material at lower price. Consequently, activities in the market were limited. Local prices of pepper in HCMC were VND 119,500 per kg for black and VND 187,500 for white pepper as against VND 116,500 and VND 185,500 respectively in the previous two weeks. In India, Lampung, Sarawak and Sri Lanka, the price of black pepper decreased marginally. In Brazil, local price was stable at BRL11.8 per kg, while the fob price of Brazil ASTA grade increased marginally by 1%. In Bangka and Hainan, white pepper prices were reported stable.

EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM VIETNAM: In 2012 Vietnam exported more than 116,500 mt of pepper, valued at around USD 792 million, as against 123,400 mt worth USD 730 million exported in 2011. Given the situation of higher carry over stock at the beginning of this year, export of pepper from Vietnam in the first quarter of this year was high. During January-March 2013 Vietnam has exported 38,400 mt valued at USD 254.3 million as against 30,900 mt worth USD 211 million in the same period last year. In April 2013 around 15,000 mt is estimated to have been shipped from Vietnam, hence total export from Vietnam during January-April 2013 is estimated to have reached 50-53,000 mt.
