MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a rather negative outlook. In local market, Malabar black pepper was traded with 3% deficit as compared with previous week with an average of USD 4,762 per Mt. Indonesia Black and white pepper were reported with the same 1% deficit as opposed to the previous week with an average of USD 1,894 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,402 per Mt for white pepper. As Indonesian black and white pepper in local currency were traded unchanged as opposed to the previous, the decrease in Indonesia pepper prices were highly contributed to the weakening of Indonesian Rupiah against US Dollar by 181 points. Malaysia black and white pepper were also reported to be traded with 1% deficit locally as compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 2,341 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,862 per Mt for white pepper. Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported stable averaging at USD 2,544 per Mt. Whilst China white peppper was traded at an average of USD 4,872 per Mt.
In international market, FOB price of India black pepper was reported with the same 3% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 5,045 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with a 1% deficit as opposed to the previous week with an average of USD 2,328 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,022 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported to be traded with a 1% deficit as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,245 per Mt, USD 2,310 per Mt and USD 3,395 per Mt respectively. China white pepper was traded internationally at an average of USD 5,072 per Mt.
US market was reported stable and unchanged with Muntok spot price being reported at USD 5,072 per Mt.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY SWEDEN
Sweden is one of the countries in Europe that imports quite a lot of pepper from various pepper producing countries. In 2017, Sweden was reported to have imported a total 1,804 Mt of pepper which 58% or 1,046 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 42% or 758 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average pepper import by Sweden in 2017 was reported to be 150 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in June with 203 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper import by Sweden amounted to USD 19.6 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Sweden at USD 11,534 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 9,998 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2018 saw pepper import by Sweden increased by 14% as compared to the previous year totalling at 2,060 Mt which comprised of 1,282 Mt of whole pepper and 778 Mt of ground pepper. The average pepper import by Sweden was reported at 172 Mt per month which peaked in February with 250 Mt. Although increasing in term of quantity, the pepper import by Sweden decreased by 19% in terms of value which only amounted to USD 15.8 Million. The average price of the total pepper imported by Sweden was reported to be at USD 8,083 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 7,049 per Mt for ground pepper which meant a loss 30% and 29% respectively as compared to the previous year.
Pepper import by Sweden as of April 2019 was reported decreased by 8% as compared with the same period in 2018, totalling at 662 Mt which comprised of 396 Mt of whole pepper and 267 Mt ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper imports by Sweden as of April 2019 decreased by 34% as compared to the same period in the previous year, totalling at USD 4.3 Million.
The top five country of origins of Sweden pepper both for whole and ground as of April 2019 were reported to be India with 266 Mt (a decrease of 30% compared with the same period in 2018), Viet Nam with 123 Mt (an increase of 1%), Netherlands with 104 Mt (an increase of 84%), Estonia with 43 Mt (a decrease of 19%) and Germany with 39 Mt (an increase of 66%). The significant decreased of Sweden import from India could be contributed that Sweden started to shift import from Netherlands and Germany which are the hub re-export to European countries.
