MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response as only India recorded a decrease. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with 2% deficit as compared to the previous week to an average of USD 4,419 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported stable with a marginal decrease to an average of USD 1,945 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,722 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were also reported stable with a marginal decrease averaging at USD 2,409 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,788 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% as opposed to the previous week to an average of USD 2,095 per Mt whilst Viet Nam white pepper was reported steady at an average of USD 2,829 per Mt. Sri Lanka black pepper was also reported with an increase of 1% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 3,157 per Mt.

India black pepper was reported with the same 2% deficit as compared to the previous week to an average of USD 4,691 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported stable with a marginal decrease to an average of USD 2,379 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,369 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported with an increase of 2%, 2% and 1% respectively when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,605 Per Mt, USD 2,686 per Mt, and USD 4,125 per Mt respectively.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY FRANCE
France, officially the French Republic, is a country which territory consists of metropolitan France in Western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. Pepper was one the earliest commodities that was traded between the Orient and Europe including France. Furthermore, France actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, France was reported to have imported a total of 11,372 Mt which 76% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, France's import of pepper decreased by 1%, totaling at 11,263 Mt. As of July 2020, France was reported to have imported a total of 7,250 Mt of which 3,691 Mt went for re-export purposes. The ratio of France's import and export during 2018-July 2020 are 2:1 respectively. The top five countries of origins of France pepper both for whole and ground as of July 2020 were reported to be Viet Nam with 2,354 Mt (Contributed to 32% of the total France's import as of July 2020), Brazil with 2,135 Mt (29%), Indonesia with 871 Mt (12%), Germany with 825 Mt (11%) and Netherlands with 227 Mt (3%).
In 2018, France was reported to have exported a total of 5,906 Mt of pepper which 64% or 3,781 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 36% or 2,124 Mt of it ground pepper. France on average exported a total of 492 Mt per month in 2018 which peaked in October with 625 Mt. The total revenue of France's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 38.6 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by France at USD 5,997 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 7,503 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw an increase in term of quantity of pepper exported by France. France was reported to have exported a total of 6,553 Mt of which 58% or 3,775 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 42% or 2,778 Mt of it ground pepper, recording an increase of 11% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by France in 2019 was reported to be 546 Mt per month which peaked in January with 725 Mt. Although increasing in term of quantity, France's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 16% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 32.6 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by France at USD 4,840 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,161 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease of 19% and 31% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of July 2020, France was reported to have exported a total of 3,691 Mt which 58% or 2,148 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 42% or 1,543 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 7% when compared to the same period in 2019. As of July 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by France was reported to have reached USD 18.5 Million, recording a decrease of 5% as compared to the same period in 2019. The average price of the total pepper exported by France as of July 2020 was reported at USD 5,111 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 4,911 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper from France is traded worldwide with most of them being European countries. As of July 2020, France's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper were reported to be United States of America with 1,077 Mt (a decrease of 6% as compared to the same period in 2019), Poland with 909 Mt (a decrease of 19%), Italy with 744 Mt (an increase of 19%), United Kingdom with 487 Mt (a decrease of 21%) and Portugal with 144 Mt (an increase of 22%). The decrease of France's pepper export to Poland was the result of Poland directly imported pepper from producing country such as Viet Nam (an increase of 72% or 456 Mt as compared to period as of May 2019). Similar with Poland, the decrease of France's pepper export to United Kingdom was the result of United Kingdom directly imported pepper form Viet Nam (an increase of 24% or 580 Mt as compared to period as of June 2019).
