WPB Week #08/15, 23 - 27 February 2015
The market showed a mixed response at different markets during the week. Pepper price in India continue to decrease, while in Vietnam and Sri Lanka increased. In Lampung and Sarawak the prices were stable. Local price in Bangka increased and of FOB price of Muntok white was reported stable.
The decrease of Malabar black in Kochi was mainly due to increased supply of pepper from current harvest. In Kochi pepper price decreased to INR 555 per kg locally from INR 605 at the beginning of the week. Although the harvest in Vietnam has started, supported by good price received during last year, producers are not in hurry to release their pepper at lower price. They are offering higher, both local as well as FOB prices. In Bangka, the increase of local price for white pepper was due to higher demand for immediate export.
IMPORT OF PEPPER TO THE UNITED STATES
During 2014, Import of pepper into the United States of America decreased by 4% from 71,730Mt in 2013 to 68,807 Mt (48,619 Mt of black pepper , 5,309 Mt of white pepper and 14,880 Mt of ground pepper). Whole black and white pepper decreased, while ground pepper import has increased. The decrease in import was in line with the decrease in production of black pepper in producing countries, during the year, mainly in Lampung, Indonesia. Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil were traditionally the most important sources of pepper for the United States, they together supply around 90% of black pepper imported into the USA. In 2014 import of black pepper from Indonesia decreased significantly from 16,502 Mt in 2013 to only 6,481 Mt in 2014. The decrease in import from Indonesia was compensated by significant increase of import from Vietnam to 26,881 Mt from 16,581 Mt in 2013. Import from Brazil decreased by 1,600 Mt to 11,574 Mt. Import from India also decreased by 1,650 Mt. In the case of white pepper, Indonesia and Vietnam were the main source, while for ground pepper was mostly imported from Indian and Vietnam.
