WPB Week #40/12, 1 - 5 October 2012
BLACK PEPPER : Source markets for black pepper were quiet this week. Offers have not reduced the price despite the lack of trading. In Vietnam traders/exporters expect offers will be empty by the time the February new crop rolls around. Export value has been reasonably good this year. Carryover towards year-end will be a big factor in 2013 pricing.
The pepper market in India moved up on good buying support on 3rd October. Consequently, all the active contracts ended marginally higher. October contract on the NCDEX increased by Rs 65 to the last traded price (LTP) of Rs 43,500 a quintal. November and December went up by Rs 230 and 175 respectively to Rs 43,350 and 42,450 a quintal.
In Brazil the new crop is in full harvest and ready to be shipped. Prices are steady as not many exporters or growers are in need for cash. Prices this week from U$D 6,500 for B2 to U$D 6,800 for ASTA grade. At the farm gate in Belem prices are between R$ 11,50 and R$ 12,00 per kg and in S-o Mateus are at R$ 12,00. Converting at present rate of 1 U$ = 2.01 R$ the farm gate cost is U$ 5,750 - U$ 5,900 to which should be added some 15% of transporting, processing, repacking, etc., which is the real market situation in Brazil.
Indonesia, already the lowest cost origin, has little incentive for buyers. During the week the local market price was further declined by around 4%.
Sri Lanka has registered a nominal increase in the local market and further strengthening the local price.
A nearly 17% recovery pushed Kuching Grade I black pepper to RM17,100 per tonne from RM14,650 per tonne. Major pepper exporters are have long-term commitment with foreign spice buyers and end-users , but finding it very tight supply locally and the prices have been pushed up as dealers and exporters are trying to buy aggressively as their inventories have run out.
Farmers in Vietnam also holding back stocks in anticipation of strengthening prices. Both in the local market as well as FOB prices are steady and expected to be in firm position in the coming months also.
WHITE PEPPER: Except Vietnam, other origins the local price for white pepper was almost stable. The current price level is expected to continue in the future also.
White pepper price in Malaysia is inching closer to this year-s highest level of about RM27,000 per tonne recorded in March-April.
