The markets were firm this week and price in domestic markets increased further, although Pepper harvest in Indonesia has almost completed and huge quantity has arrived in the market. In Lampung local price of black Pepper increased almost daily during the week, from IDR 115,000 per Kg at the beginning of the week to IDR 120,000 at the week's close. In East Lampung even some trader paid IDR 125,000 per Kg for getting Pepper. In Bangka, local price of white Pepper stood at the level of IDR 175,000 per Kg throughout the week.
As reported earlier, supported by good weather condition during flowering and fruiting season, production of Pepper in Indonesia has increased. However, since extreme hot weather hit Pepper producing areas in the last few months, many pepper spikes have fallen down, particularly in Bangka and Kalimantan and this is resulting in more of black Pepper produced in these areas.
In Sarawak local price of black Pepper increase by MYR 2.- per Kg from MR 27 per Kg last week to MYR 29 this week. White Pepper also increased to MYR 49 per Kg from MYR 47 per Kg last week.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY JAPAN:
During 2014 Japan imported 8,833 Mt of Pepper, comprising of 5,194 Mt of whole Pepper and 3,640 Mt of ground Pepper, as against 8,514 Mt (4,895 Mt of whole and 3,619 Mt of ground Pepper) imported during the year 2013. Malaysia was the main supplier of whole Pepper for Japan, while for ground Pepper was mainly imported from Indonesia. During January - June 2015, total import of Pepper into Japan was 4,468 Mt (2,429 Mt of whole and 2,039 Mt of ground Pepper). When compared to import in the same period last year, there was an increase of around 11%. Malaysia and Indonesia remained the most important source of whole and ground Pepper respectively for Japan in the first half of the year 2014. Supported by available material from its main source, it is expected that, total import of Japan would be higher this year.
