Local market of pepper showed a mixed response during this week. In India the price decreased, while in Lampung and Sri Lanka increased. In Sarawak and Bangka, the prices were reported stable.

Closing Eid celebration taking place on 17 and 18 July, pepper market in Indonesia and Sarawak is very quiet. Local price of Lampung black increased by IDR 2,000 per Kg to IDR 117,000; while for Muntok white in Bangka stable at the level of IDR 176,000 per Kg.

In Sarawak, local price of black and white pepper remains unchanged at the level of MYR 28 and MYR 46 per Kg, respectively, for black and white pepper.

VIETNAM ENJOYED THE SPICINESS OF BLACK PEPPER
The rising production of pepper and continued increase in the price of pepper has contributed greatly to the economic growth of pepper farmers in Vietnam. During the last 10 year period, production of pepper in Vietnam increased from 104,500 Mt to 125,000 Mt in 2014. In 2014 export earnings from pepper increased substantially to US$ 1,2 billion from only US$ 150 million in 2005. Observing the continued high price, export earnings from pepper is estimated to remain high this year, even higher. During the last ten years, black pepper price in Vietnam increased by more than ten times from VND 18,000 per Kg in July 2005 to VND 200,000 in June 2015. White pepper increased from VND 58,000 in early 2007 to VND 270,000 in June 2015.
