The market behaviour for pepper during the week was not constant. In India and Lampung, the price decreased; while in Vietnam, Sarawak and Sri Lanka the price of black pepper increased. Increase in supply with new harvest in India has likely brought price to a new pattern. Price disparity among producing countries became narrower.

During the week, pepper price decreased significantly by 9% in India and in Lampung decreased by 3%. In Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Sarawak the price increased by 4%, 2% and 1% respectively.

In the case of white pepper, the price in Bangka increased by 2%, while in Vietnam and Sarawak it was relatively stable. In dollar term however, local price of Sarawak white decreased marginally by 1% due to weakening local currency against US dollar.

IMPORTOF PEPPER BY JAPAN:
Import of pepper into Japan was relatively stable at around 8-9,000 Mt annually. Up to the year of 2009, import of ground pepper increased from year to year, while import of whole pepper indicated a decrease. During the last six year, imports of ground pepper was relatively stable at around 3,600 Mt a year while for whole pepper fluctuated between 4,600 - 5,300 Mt. In 2014 import of total pepper to Japan was 8,834 Mt an increase of by around 4% from 2013 and 9% from 8,131 Mt imported in 2012. The continuous increase of import during the last few years has indicated that demand for pepper in Japan has increased, despite of higher prices prevailed; and inventory of pepper seemed to be very limited. Sarawak was traditionally the main source of whole pepper for Japan. For ground pepper, Indonesia maintained its position as the major supplier of ground pepper in the last four years, replacing the domination of Sarawak.
