Pepper price showed a declining trend across the origins. The decline of pepper prices noticed with the start of the harvesting season in India, which is now reaching towards the peak harvest. Initial harvest in Vietnam has also started. In India, the market was active as material from new crop has arrived in the market. Local price decreased from INR 650 per Kg last week to INR 585 this week. On an average pepper price in India decreased by 9%. Significant decrease was also recorded in Sri Lanka by 8%. In Lampung and Sarawak, local prices of black pepper decreased by 2%. Effect of market development in India seems to be less toward white pepper.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY GERMANY:
Import of pepper into Germany increased from 27,495 Mt in 2012 to 30,514 Mt in 2013. Due to significant fall of the production in 2014, supply from producing countries was limited. As per the monthly import figure as shown below, import of pepper into Germany in 2014 would be lower compared with the 2013. Up to September Germany imported 18,937 Mt of pepper (17,187 Mt of whole pepper and 1,750 Mt of ground pepper), registering a decrease of 14%. Import of whole pepper decreased by 16%, but for ground pepper increased by 16%. Brazil was the main supplier of pepper into Germany accounted for around 35% of the volume, followed by Vietnam (23%), Indonesia (13%) and Netherlands (12%).
