MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported stable at an average of USD 4,542 per Mt. Following stocks getting thinner, Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 9% and 3% as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,352 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,097 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable at an average of USD 2,312 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,788 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported with 1% and 4% deficit when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,342 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,342 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with 3% deficit as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,906 per Mt. China white pepper was also reported with 1% deficit as opposed to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 5,113 per Mt locally.
International market showed a rather positive outlook as India black pepper was reported staying at an average of USD 4,814 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 8% and 3% as compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 2,852 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,799 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% respectively when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 2,855 per Mt, USD 2,936 per Mt and USD 4,425 per Mt respectively. China white pepper was reported with 1% deficit when compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 5,313 per Mt.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY BULGARIA
Bulgaria, Officially the Republic of Bulgaria is a country in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. Furthermore, Bulgaria actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Bulgaria was reported to have imported a total of 966 Mt which 84% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, Bulgaria's import of pepper decreased by 25%, totaling at 725 Mt. As of August 2020, Bulgaria was reported to have imported a total of 584 Mt of which 541 Mt went for re-export purposes. The top five countries of origins of Bulgaria pepper both for whole and ground as of August 2020 were reported to be Viet Nam with 402 Mt (Contributed to 69% of the total pepper imported by Bulgaria as of August 2020), Brazil with 74 Mt (13%), Spain with 30 Mt (5%), Greece with 21 Mt (4%) and Ecuador with 15 Mt (3%).
In 2018, Bulgaria was reported to have exported a total of 1,165 Mt of pepper which 10% or 119 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 90% or 1,046 Mt of it ground pepper. Bulgaria on average exported a total of 97 Mt per month in 2018 which peaked in November with 150 Mt. The total revenue of Bulgaria's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 2.5 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by Bulgaria at USD 2,851 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 2,143 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw a decrease in term of quantity of pepper exported by Bulgaria. Bulgaria was reported to have exported a total of 1,066 Mt of which 6% or 60 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 94% or 1,006 Mt of it ground pepper, recording a decrease of 8% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by Bulgaria in 2019 was reported to be 89 Mt per month which peaked in October with 138 Mt. In accordance with decreasing in term of quantity, Bulgaria's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 12% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 2.2 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Bulgaria at USD 3,333 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 2,067 per Mt for ground pepper or an increase of 17% for whole pepper and a decrease of 4% for ground pepper as compared to 2018.
As of August 2020, Bulgaria was reported to have exported a total of 541 Mt which 7% or 36 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 93% or 505 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 23% when compared to the same period in 2019. As of August 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by Bulgaria was reported to have reached USD 1.2 Million, recording a decrease of 14% as compared to the same period in 2019. The average price of the total pepper exported by Bulgaria as of August 2020 was reported to be USD 3,295 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 2,320 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper from Bulgaria is traded worldwide with most of them being European countries. As of August 2020, Bulgaria's top 5 country destinations for its pepper were reported to be Hungary with 233 Mt (an increase of 22% as compared to the same period in 2019), Poland with 89 Mt (an increase of 11%), Netherlands with 43 Mt (an increase of 87%), North Macedonia with 42 Mt (an increase of 8%) and Greece with 36 Mt (an increase of 13%).
