In Lampung, black pepper price at farms stood at the level of IDR 85,000 (US$ 6,450) per Kg. When compared to the last weekÔÇÖs average price, the Pepper price has decreased, in dollar terms, by -4%. The situation should not have happened, since production of black pepper in Lampung decreased significantly this year. In Bangka local price of white pepper was relatively stable. A marginal decrease of -1% in dollar in local price was due to weakening of Indonesian Rupiah against US Dollar.

In Sarawak, local price of black pepper was stable. In dollar terms however the price decreased by -1%, because of weakening of Malaysian Ringgit against US Dollar.

In Vietnam, prices prevailed during the week have shown an improvement, after experiencing a significant decrease at the beginning of the week. On an average however, the price was still lower by -5% in the local market, when compared to last week average price of pepper. In Sri Lanka, a marginal increase of 1% was recorded. Though, figure is not received from India due to ÔÇÿOnamÔÇÖ festival, but Malabar black pepper price was reported to remain high during the week.

IMPORT OF PEPPER BY SOUTH KOREA:
In the last five years import of pepper by South Korea increased year by year from 4,300 Mt (4,000 Mt of whole pepper and 300 Mt of ground pepper) in 2011 to 5,400 Mt (4,975 Mt of whole pepper and 425 Mt of ground pepper) in 2015, recording an increase of 25% or 5% per year.

It is expected that import of pepper by South Korea in 2016 will be remaining high as indicated by import performance in the last seven months as shown in the following table and chart. Vietnam was the main source of pepper for South Korea, supplying more than 85%, replacing traditional supplies from Malaysia to second place, supplying only 8% during January to July 2016.
