Pepper prices decreased at origins. Current harvest in Indonesia which is anticipated to be better has likely influenced the market. In Vietnam, price of black Pepper decreased to VND 183,000 per Kg at the beginning of the week from VND 186,000 per Kg recorded at the last weekÔÇÖs close. During the week the price has gradually recovered and closed at the level of VND 188,000 per Kg on 14 August. On an average however, the local price of black Pepper decreased by 4%. Weakening of Vietnam Dong has also contributed to the decrease in price. In Sarawak and Sri Lanka local price of black Pepper decreased by 4% and 6% respectively. In respect of FOB price, except in Vietnam, the price remained stable as last week.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED STATES:
In June 2015, import of Pepper into the United States was 6,660 Mt, (4,457 Mt of black, 566 Mt of white and 1,635 Mt of ground Pepper), recording a marginal increase from import of 6,466 Mt in June 2014. Import of whole Pepper decreased, while import of ground Pepper increased.
During January - June 2015, the United States has imported 41,876 Mt, comprising of 27,884 Mt of black Pepper, 2,306 Mt of white Pepper and 11,686 Mt of ground Pepper. The import showed an increase of 18% from the import of 35,476 Mt in the same period last year. It is interesting to note that import of ground Pepper increased significantly by 80% in the first half of the year from 6,489 Mt in 2014 to 11,686 Mt. Import of whole black Pepper also increased by 6%, while import of white Pepper decreased by 14%.
Vietnam continued to be the most important source of black Pepper for the United States, supplying 15,911 Mt or 57% during January-June 2015, followed by Brazil 7,098 Mt (25%). Indonesia and India contributed 8% and 7% respectively. White Pepper was mainly imported from Indonesia (57%) and Vietnam (41%); while ground Pepper was from India (45%) and Vietnam (30%); contributing to 75% of ground Pepper import to the United States during the first six month of 2015.
