Pepper market showed a mixed response this week. Local price of black pepper in Lampung and Vietnam increased; while in India and Sri Lanka a marginal decrease was recorded. Increased arrivals in Kerala were reported to be the reason for the price decrease in India. In Lampung, due to very limited stocks available at farm levels, traders faced difficulty in getting materials. Local price in the origin increased by IDR 5,000, to reach at IDR 110,000 per Kg.
In the case of white pepper, prices were relatively more stable. In dollar terms, marginal decrease of local price in Sarawak was reported due to weakening of Malaysian Ringgit against US dollar.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM INDONESIA
It is reported that export of pepper from Indonesia decreased significantly in 2014. Totally, around 35,000 Mt of pepper (19,000 Mt of black and 16,000 Mt of white pepper) is estimated to have been exported from Indonesia in 2014 as against 48,000 Mt, comprising of 31,500 Mt of black and 16,500 Mt of white pepper exported in 2013. The decrease was mainly due to significant fall of export from Lampung, which so far contributes around 80-90% of black pepper.
During 2014, export of pepper from Lampung decreased substantially from 29,700 Mt in 2013 to 15,200 Mt in 2014. This was due to significant fall of production of pepper in Lampung. In 2015 export of black pepper in Lampung is estimated to increase. This is supported by the good harvest which is anticipated to take place in July this year. In February 2015 export of pepper from Lampung was 641 Mt, valued at US$ 6.1 million, as against 548 Mt worth US$ 4.1 million in 2014. During the first two month, total export from Lampung was 1,261 valued at US$ 12 million. When compared to export in the first two months in last year an increase of 41% in volume and 77% in value were recorded.
