Pepper market continued to be steady, In Lampung, black pepper price increased by 4% and in Bangka for white pepper price increased marginally by 1%. A similar trend was recorded in Sarawak too. In Kochi, local price of Malabar black stood at INR 715 per kg through out the week. Compared to last week-s however, the price decreased marginally by 1%. In Vietnam and Sri Lanka the prices were reported stable.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY UNITED KINGDOM:
During the last ten years import of pepper into the United Kingdom increased significantly from 5,502Mt in 2004 to almost 13,000Mt in 2013. It is interesting to note that, the increase was recorded mainly in Ground pepper import, while Whole pepper import was more or less stagnant. In 2004 import of ground pepper was 2,108Mt and the volume increased by 4.3 folds to reach 9,112 Mt in 2013. Due to tight supply from producing countries, in 2014, import by the United Kingdom is estimated to decrease as indicated by the import performance achieved in January - April 2014 as shown in the following table. Vietnam, India and Netherlands are the main pepper supplier for United Kingdom.
